Baltimore is named after Cecil Calvert, the second Lord of Baltimore of the Irish House of Lords. But long before Cecil Calvert came to the New World, Baltimore was simply a city in Cork, Ireland. In Irish, Baile an Tigh Mhoir or Baile an Tí Mhóir, means "town of the big house",  named for the castle of the O'Driscoll's which still stands today. Baltimore may be name after English gentry, but her name is rooted deeply in the old history of Ireland.
